Thanks for the link, apo. Some great stuff in there. One thing that struck me, because it reminds me of China, is the ubiquity of garbage in public places (e.g. in those photos of people at a beach). Having grown up under "Give a hoot, don't pollute!" propaganda, I would carry a gum wrapper for miles in China looking for a trashcan, all the while witnessing people just dropping trash anywhere on the street or throwing it out of bus and train windows.

I remember telling my parents and they basically said, "Yeah, that's how we used to do things here in the US before Woodsy the Owl came along." And in fact while I was in Shanghai they started an effort to convince people not to litter (it was part of their "Seven Don'ts" campaign) and to clean up existing litter. The difference in amount of street litter between Shanghai and towns just outside it became very marked.

Oh M/tch, you youngster - "Give a hoot, don't pollute" is so 70's.

Why I recall Lady Bird Johnson and her "Don't be a litter bug" campaign. Maybe something came before that, I dunno.

I do agree that "don't litter" is one of the nice modern trends, kinda like a working sanitation system. I hope the world continues that trend, since it mostly takes a little human effort and not much more. We don't need fossil fuels to dispose of litter correctly. At least I hope not.

"Don't random through the street" is a pretty lovely mistranslation.
