Did you follow the link for Cocker's "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window"? It's pretty awesome.
Posted by: Clownęsthesiologist at June 25, 2008 03:35 PMThe subtitles and graphics were awesome.
Cocker is one of those performers who makes me ask "Why oh why? How? What the fuck??? Is there, at last, no justice in this world???!????1?? There are so many more deserving!!!one!!"
It's not that he's particularly bad, all competition considered, it's just that he's successful. Who buys that shit? Whyyyy????!?11??
Also in that esteemed category:
Keanu Reeves
Sting
Patrick Nagel
Coldplay
Glenn Reynolds
Your mother
1: Can you specify which link? All I got was a one to Cocker's sub-original cover. Is there a version with funny subtitles?
The one I watched again confirmed to me what seems to be his whole schtick: covers that are worse than the original. The simple fact that they're sung in a scratchier voice, with lots of backup singers, plus with extra repetitiviness, does not endear them to me. Why does this guy have a career in the music business? Why do I know his name and his music?? For Christ's sake, Phil Ochs killed himself for (among other things probably) lack of recognition. What the fuck is wrong with the Universe???

43.
Aw, shit. You're going have to refine your question.
Posted by: Michael at June 26, 2008 03:11 AM3: No, that's the one I was talking about. I thought it was pretty hot. Leon Russell! Tastes vary though. In general I'm not crazy about Cocker, but his success does not drive me to distraction. But I really liked that "Bathroom Window" cover.
Anyway, sorry to make you watch something you didn't like. Perhaps this will make up the deficit? It is Robyn Hitchcock, Nick Lowe, and Elvis Costello covering The Band's "Mystery Train" -- the beginning of the video is a cover of "If I Fell in Love With You", which is nice, but "Mystery Train" is great.

Music is dead man. In the words of business it has passed being mature and it is now a commodity.
We know all the correct chord progressions, someone has already written all the good music, and someone has already sung all of it better.
The only thing left is topical and niche.
Cocker's niche is anti-establishment take what you like and twist it with drugs.

Notably non-scratchy, however.
Posted by: Clownæsthesiologist at June 27, 2008 10:59 PMYeah, you're right, the Beatles are primarily known as composers.
Anyway, I have no problem with covers per se, but shitty covers? Those I don't like.
