Because they intend to cheat. Again.

If anybody can come up with another explanation of why the Republicans would want to kill this bill, I'm all ears.

Counting votes leaves less time for hot gay sex.

I'd take exception to the above post by Cangrejero. Stealing an election makes them orgasm before they can get their pants off.

I believe the clinical term for this is Autoerotic Afixedelection.

I say we lock the Congress in a Thunderdome style cage, and give them sharp, post-apocalyptic makeshift bladed weaponry and iron studded heavy metal costume armor.

Then let them duke it out. The last five or so left alive we can allow to rule the country.

Republicans think they know everything when it comes to elections and think of every sly thing they can do to stop democrats from taking the seat. This pisses me off when they do crap like this. The fact that they want to steal an election makes no sense at all, period! Remember the 2000 election that George W. Bush stole from the Democratic Party? Al Gore got more votes than Bush but somehow the election was given to him.

Even Instapundit is in favor of paper trails. It's one of his pet issues.

Facts anyone?
Check out Help America Vote Act of 2002: http://www.fec.gov/hava/hava.htm, it allow(ed/s) for reimbursement for paper-based voting systems - since 2002! Florida (yes, the same from the 2000 Election) has this type of system, reimbursed by the Feds: http://election.dos.state.fl.us/hava/index.shtml. If a state hasn't implemented one by now, they either waited too late or figured they didn't need one. For this purpose, H.R. 5036 is redundant: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/cpquery/?&dbname=cp110&sid=cp110yHCac&refer=&r_n=hr582p1.110&item=&sel=TOC_76929&.

I realize hyperventilation and self-righteous rants are easier and more fun than a little research.

Um, do the Republicans have majorities? Would Bush veto this bill? Why don't Democrats pass bills that THEY want?

I certainly don't trust the Republicans, other than to continue to be the lying, win-at-all-costs thieves that they have shown themselves to be.

But states are perfectly capable of spending the money they want on their own voting systems.

I think electronic voting machines are a terrible idea, regardless of whether or not they print an audit trail. How does this assure us that each key stroke or screen touch is valid? I’d rather see mandatory paper ballots.

When you say "they", who do you mean, exactly?

Google's top (AOTW) image result for "they" is worthwhile.

Good grammatical catch! "..their legislature" would have been more accurate.

Damn, did it again, make that "the legislature"....

Of course, anyone schooled in biblical esoterica knows that the Antichrist was a symbol for the Roman Emperor Nero.

He died 1900 years ago. Duh. So this discussion is all nonsense.
