I went from a +32 to a -32. Ranked lower than Muslim? Should probably put out an American flag at the apartment.
Posted by: asl at April 18, 2008 04:35 PMWell, Baptists have a 45% positive and atheists have a 45% negative. Coincidence? I think not.
Posted by: John Johnson at April 18, 2008 04:40 PMBy the way, I thought you identified yourself as a "militant agnostic."
Posted by: John Johnson at April 18, 2008 04:40 PMMy campaign against Methodists seems to be falling short. Back to the drawing board.

For the purposes of this exercise, I'm pretty sure I'm in the cohort.
Posted by: apostropher at April 18, 2008 05:50 PMIt's surprising to me that Baptists only have a 10% total negative.
Posted by: apostropher at April 18, 2008 05:51 PMWhat this survey is telling me is that a large portion of America doesn't give a $#!+ what you believe, as long as you don't try to force it down other people's throats or try to brainwash people.
Posted by: John Johnson at April 18, 2008 10:45 PMI suspect a little self-censorship from the Christian Zionist masses on the "Jews" part of that questionnaire.
Posted by: Doctor Slack at April 19, 2008 12:40 AMI suspect a little self-censorship from the Christian Zionist masses on the "Jews" part of that questionnaire.
Nah. First of all, we're awesome. Second, the fundies love us because we're helping to bring about Armageddon in the holy land.
Posted by: Gaijin Biker at April 19, 2008 02:11 AMIt would be nice to have figures for "Christians" as a group, instead of subdivided into this and that flavor of Jesus love.
Also, the whole concept of the survey is bogus, because it doesn't adjust for what proportion of the overall sample each group represents. For example, if the survey group is mostly Methodist, it's only logical that Methodists fare best. On the other hand, since Jews were probably a minority of the sample, our kickass showing is all the more impressive. Finally, it's no surprise that Atheists come up short because they're one group that all the other groups (except Scientologists) can unite against: they don't believe in the Abrahamic god of the Bible/Koran. Scientologists also fall in this category, plus they're raging a**holes to boot.
A more meaningful and informative way to show the survey results would be to show (1) how each of the 10 groups feels about each of the other nine groups, and (2) what percentage of the sample group each of the 10 groups represents.

As someone who likes bagels and lox, I'm compelled to agree.
the fundies love us because we're helping to bring about Armageddon in the holy land.
I think they especially like the part where you're all killed or stop being Jews. What we really need to figure out is their stance on cuisine.

True.

Evangelical Christianity does not love Jews, it rather fetishizes them.
I think Jews are fine. After all, it is almost stating the obvious that America's #1 hero, Superman, is a Jew.

Posted by: Jon at April 19, 2008 05:59 AMSo fundies are slightly worse than evangelicals? How can you tell?
Posted by: shpx.ohfu at April 19, 2008 08:11 AMOf course the namby-pamby Methodists come out on top. People prefer the denomination with the least religion in it.
Posted by: caradoc at April 19, 2008 11:00 AMMy mother was raised Methodist. She calls them "God's luke-warm people."
Posted by: apostropher at April 19, 2008 11:41 AM"My mother was raised Methodist. She calls them "God's luke-warm people.""
Why? I have this vague recollection of Jesus commenting, not kindly, about like-warm believers.
Anyway, it's nice to see that Scientologist have almost completely recouped their traditional reputation/image for being a creepy, nefarious cult.

And as long as you're not an atheist. Or a Muslim. Or Mormon.
Posted by: Cryptic Ned at April 19, 2008 03:58 PMMy first thought was, "what? I thought the fundies liked the Catholics these days!"
Then I realized that the negatives against the Catholics are all probably coming from the secular liberals like Apo.
Posted by: bitchphd at April 19, 2008 04:14 PMWeird that it doesn't include other Protestants. What of the Presbyterians, the Lutherans, the Episcopalians?
Posted by: Sir Kraab at April 19, 2008 06:51 PMJust wait 'til they find out HRC is a Methodist. That'll bring those numbers down.
Posted by: Klug at April 19, 2008 08:52 PM7% of Americans are Scientologists? that doesn't seem right.
It's surprising to me that Baptists only have a 10% total negative.
Me too.
If someone had asked me to guess which religious group was the most positively viewed, I would have guessed Episcopalian. Too bad they're not represented.
Posted by: Michael at April 19, 2008 11:18 PMWhat does this tell us, other that what we already know about human nature?
We are tribal and so feel more comfortable about those who are most like us, and uncomfortable with those who don`t want to be in our group - especially those like the atheists who deliberately reject an important aspect of our group identity. For that reason, betcha if they polled about agnostics, they`d fare MUCH better than atheists.
Posted by: TokyoTom at April 19, 2008 11:43 PM24: It is more than this, I think. Believers think that all morality springs from the divine being and therefore unbelievers are immoral. This aspect of group identity pretends to stem from cultural values regarding moral behavior, but is more about conformity than morality. Believers are good because they seek social acceptance or fear damnation. Atheists are good because of their personal convictions.

Dammit, I knew there had to be a catch.
Posted by: Gaijin Biker at April 21, 2008 12:12 AMScientology is registered to the Religious Technology Corporation. It's our mumbo-jumbo, not yours, and you can't even talk about it or we'll sue.
It works for me, and that's what counts;
Give us cash in large amounts.
HA! The Presbyterian plan to run everything without anyone knowing we're here continues apace!
Posted by: John Burns at April 21, 2008 11:17 AMEverybody loves Presbyterians because you can rearrange the letters to spell Britney Spears.
Posted by: apostropher at April 21, 2008 11:23 AM29: No, apo, everyone loves Britney Spears because you can rearrange the letters to spell "Presbyterians". Duh.
Posted by: M/tch M/lls at April 21, 2008 08:32 PMI would be curious to see Americans' views towards polytheistic religions and other non-monotheistic beliefs - like neopaganism or something like that? Would these be more favorable than Atheists?
Posted by: Joel at April 21, 2008 09:02 PMNeed I remind you of that place called Salem? We've come a long way, though. Now fire is merely threatened in the afterlife.
