Teaching them to "shake" will probably be pretty challenging. "Roll over" too, I'd guess. But "play dead", with the wheels in the air, still spinning like in a just completed auto crash, should be awesome.
Posted by: M/tch M/lls at January 13, 2008 11:02 AMI, for one, welcome our tiny front-wheel drive overlords.
Posted by: Ubu Imperator at January 13, 2008 03:38 PMVery cool. But the article's "front-wheel drive" seems like a really poor description of this prosthesis.
Posted by: Clownæsthesiologist at January 13, 2008 05:53 PMWhy are they born without front legs???
(By the way, speaking of paraplegic animals, our half-paralyzed mouse seems to be doing really well, considering. Goddamn tough little beastie.)
Posted by: bitchphd at January 13, 2008 09:02 PMThe article says a genetic mutation renders the little doggies armless.
How'd your mouse get paralyzed?
Posted by: M/tch M/lls at January 13, 2008 09:38 PM#7: Armless? I'd bet one o' them nippers'd rip your hand clean off if ye 'appened to give 'im 'alf a chance.
Posted by: Gaijin Biker at January 14, 2008 12:10 AMAlso, how come we never get cool genetic mutations, like the X-men?

Oh, it happens. For instance, I can turn beer into urine. Also, there's my freakishly large johnson.

You told me that was the doo-hickey you sold me. I got medical bills, you SOB.
Posted by: froz gobo at January 14, 2008 10:19 PMMeddling humans have, by "helping", ruined the opportunity of these chihauhuas to learn to walk upright on their hind legs. Now they are chained for life to these wheels - and to elevated food/water dishes. Technology can only incompletely subsititute for a more caring interaction involving teaching.
Wonder whether they've taken to "marking" each others' wheels?
Posted by: TokyoTom at January 14, 2008 10:45 PM16: It's probably not too late to plead with them to have the chihuahuas shipped to you, Tom, for said more caring interaction.
Posted by: M/tch M/lls at January 15, 2008 12:20 AM17: That was firmly tongue-in-cheek M/tch.
Actually, the link indicates that these chihuahuas have also been trained in walking on their hind legs; the wheels give them an occasional break, in addition to satisfying some mechanically-inclined do-gooder.
FWIW, when my kids were growing up we got one nice yellow lab mix from the same shelter.
Posted by: TokyoTom at January 15, 2008 01:35 AM1: It seems they've traded off stability for turning ability.
