Do they explain their methodology anywhere? (Although the results look about right in an eyeball sort of way.)
Posted by: ogged at August 17, 2007 10:47 AMI'm more leftist and libertarian than any of those pretenders! Vote Apostropher '08! Some pot in every chicken!
Posted by: apostropher at August 17, 2007 11:58 AMI am surprised to see Ron Paul on the authoritarian side. He has always seemed to be a firm Libertarian.
(Incidentally, my own profile is spot on Ghandi's)
Ron Paul has a 75% rating from the Christian Coalition, which isn't really known for its libertarian leanings.

Free babies, sex, and drugs for all! = )
One thing is clear: If you're a libertarian, you should be voting D.
Posted by: lemuel pitkin at August 17, 2007 04:15 PMNo no, That can't be right! :)
Move Ron Paul down and to the left several score points deep into central libertarian terrirtory. Move Kuchinich out of Libertarian and farther to the left. Move Gravel up slightly to the zero axis of libertarian-authoritarian.

The questions were vague and lacked proper definition and proportionality, and some weren't even political in nature at all.

1) There were several questions that definitely needed more options for answers, or a more specific structure to them.
2) I do wish they hadn't used "libertarian" as the name for the opposite of "authoritarian." Most of the so-called libertarians out there are at least as authoritarian as Brownback, and in the same areas.
Posted by: Dr Paisley at August 19, 2007 12:48 AMSomeone just to the left and libertarian of center gets called a fringe candidate?
Hrmph.
I think it would be interesting to compare the political leanings of politicians and the general public. (Assuming this tool is valid.)

neat.

I wonder, though, whether this graph is adequate for one of the key issues of today's authoritarianism - taking away rights in order to ensure "safety".
Also, I would have imagined Giuliani as the most authoritarian. I suppose I should be watching the race more closely.

Yep, somewhere to the left of Ghandi.
Posted by: Tlazolteotl at August 20, 2007 06:24 PMI see a fairly significant flaw in their methodology, which is that of using a candidates political record as evidence of their true positions.
For candidates who've mostly worked as an executive -- Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee, or Richardson -- their record and their positions may match somewhat closely.
But for candidates who've worked in a legislative body -- all of the Democratic front-runners, for example -- their record necessarily involves advocating legislation that can muster support from a majority of their colleagues, even if that legislation is more centrist than their "true position" on the issue.
By including these consensus-building actions as data for placing political candidates, the results are more error-prone for senators and representatives than they are for governors and mayors.
Posted by: Heath at August 21, 2007 08:25 AMGhandi was quite a conservative as far as sex and birth control goes. He thought that contraception was wrong and that people should only have sex for the purpose of reproduction.
