A Pulitzer doesn't keep the lights on.

Paris Hilton really isn't my field of interest, so I can't work up much concern one way or the other over her legal status. But you know what is really interesting? You've seen this picture about two million times by now, right?

Paris

The guy who took that picture has another one you might have seen before.

Everybody's gotta eat, of course, but still. Damn. Props to Acephalous for the spot.

Hilton is displaying approximately the same degree of anguish as the kids running naked down the street.

I actually don't see the problem here. First because Ut is (I assume) a journalist; his job is to document whatever's happening. Second because the Hilton one is actually a pretty awesome photo.

Question tho is why the Iraq war hasn't produced those kind of stark images of the victims. Or rather, since it sure has: why we aren't seeing them.

There's no problem. It's just that going from one of the two or three iconic war photos of all time to covering the Paris Hilton debacle must seem like a big step down the relevance ladder.

The "why aren't we seeing them" question, though, has only disturbing and/or depressing possible answers, mostly that directly address the issue of who we are as a country.

The Wikipædia article notes that both photos were taken on June 8.

With all the photos to run of freshly repainted schools, I'm afraid there just hasn't been room for much else.

Thanks for reminding us that we are still fighting a war, apo - one that has produced and continues to produce horrific casualties and hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Unfortunately, part of our humanity is our lack of concern about how others suffer from what we do. We are more interested in seeing our glitterati humbled.

The napalm photo is real news; the Paris crying photo simply caters to our prurient interests. The corporate media sees no money to be made in actually covering war, unlike the frenzy over nonsense like this.

He is now trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.

Lemuel: you mean photo collections like these?

Apo, how am I supposed to concentrate when there haven't been any new posts all week? Quit doting over that new kid and get back to "work"!

It sure would be nice if we had a free press, like in the good old days.

This is bread and circuses kind of stuff, force-fed to the mushroomish American public by the military industrial complex who owns the mainstream media.
