First, congratulations to the UNC women's team for winning the ACC tournament and the men's team for winning the regular season with a sweep of Duke. And speaking of which:
With the Blue Devils obviously inferior to the Heels, their only chance to win this game and derail Carolina's ACC title hopes was to junk the game up and win on effort. [...] In the end, Henderson clearly took the physical play thing too far. Took it all the way to the locker room and an invitation to wear street clothes in Tampa on Thursday night.
So Duke wakes up Monday with a fresh black eye and a fourth loss to Carolina in the past five meetings. For the image-obsessed Blue Devils, it gets no worse than being bad and being dirty.
Henderson's lucky to only get a one-game suspension. If this were the NBA, he'd be looking at several games plus a big fine. When these two teams meet again, whether in the post-season or next year, I wouldn't recommend Gerald Henderson try to drive the lane.
Update: Despite initial reports, Hansbrough's nose is broken and he'll need a root canal after the season.
From the article: Chuck Wepner never hemorrhaged like Hansbrough did
Congrats to the 'heels and all but jeez, is that ESPN.com or The Daily Tarheel?
Posted by: Cangrejero at March 5, 2007 10:08 AMHeh. It did look much worse in slo-mo than it did in real time, and of course the play took place in real time. So I doubt Henderson was really trying to smash a forearm into anybody's face, but it seems clear to me that he was going in to deliver a hard foul and knock Hansbrough down.
If NCSU knocks Duke out in the first round, it will all have been worth it.
Posted by: apostropher at March 5, 2007 10:45 AMNot alot of ACC news here in the NW. Who's up for Final Four this year? I've got a bet going on with a boy from Florida...
Posted by: cheerylilgoth at March 5, 2007 12:21 PMIn the words of the screaming child in the Marvin Monroe Family Therapy commercial in season one of the Simpsons: WHY DON'T YOU BOTH LOSE IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT?!?
Posted by: norbizness at March 5, 2007 12:31 PMDuke's likely headed for the dreaded 5 seed, so I wouldn't bet big money on them getting to the second round.
Posted by: apostropher at March 5, 2007 12:36 PMI think this guy in 'Carolina March' pretty much got it right:
I still don't think Henderson did anything intentional in injurying Tyler Hansbrough, although I appear to be in the minority with that opinion. That being said, Krzyzewski's postgame comments are inexcusable:
“That’s unfortunate too that those people were in the game in that way," Coach K said. "It’s 20 seconds left, I’m not blaming anybody, I’m just saying it’s unfortunate and we probably should have both had our walk-ons on.”
That's a pretty reasonable comment, if you're not one of the two people in the building in charge of who's on the court. There were eighteen seconds left in the game, and Duke was down twelve. Thirty seconds earlier, you called a timeout, down 13. Two seconds earlier, your starting point guard fouled on the inbounds to stop the clock. One second earlier, your starting center fouled for the same reason. You kept the starters in the game too long. You were still going full bore to win. It was your decision. It wasn't happenstance those players were in the game, it was by design. Don't imply otherwise.
And as to Duke's #5 -- the Texas Longhorns are on a run and intend to take that spot.
Posted by: Charles Watkins at March 5, 2007 01:01 PMIndeed, Krzyzewski has some kinda goddamn nerve saying that.
At the end of the blowout wins win over Wake Forest (62-40) and BC (75-61), Krzyzewski had Paulus, McRoberts, Henderson, Nelson, and Scheyer on the floor when the final buzzer sounded.
Posted by: apostropher at March 5, 2007 01:06 PMRoy got a little peeved during his postgame news conference when someone asked him about Coach K's comments.
IMHO, while it did look worse in the replay, the speed with which Henderson's arm was moving and the direction in which it was moving make a pretty good case for the fact that it was, in fact, a punch. Of course, opinions vary. My 2 cents.
Posted by: NCProsecutor at March 5, 2007 01:57 PMI explained it thusly to a Californian today when he inquired about the intense rivalry: If this had happened in Cameron, Hansbrough would have been called (2 shots) for hitting Henderson's forearm with his face and then been tagged with a 13-shot technical for flagrantly spitting blood on the floor.
Posted by: froz gobo at March 6, 2007 12:26 AMEven a regular root canal is unpleasant. A nasal root canal has got to be really bad :)
Posted by: David at March 6, 2007 12:05 PMNone of y'all want any of the Davidson Wildcats.
The 29-4 Davidson Wildcats.
Posted by: DrFrankLives at March 6, 2007 03:27 PMHey, if y'all can't even beat dook, we ain't scared.
Seriously though, good on Davidson. And props to Curry on a fantastic rookie season.
Posted by: apostropher at March 6, 2007 03:34 PM[eye roll] The comments to that op-ed dissect it nicely.
Posted by: apostropher at March 6, 2007 11:21 PMI particularly like the "Hansbrough shouldn't even have been on the court" argument. Yeah, and he shouldn't have been wearing that dress.
Posted by: Gaijin Biker at March 6, 2007 11:48 PMI look forward to Dick Vitale's rebuttal. I think it goes something like "DDDUUUUUUUUKKKKKEEEEEEEEEE"
Posted by: norbizness at March 7, 2007 08:36 AMHey, how about Dewey Burke being the guy to hold Tyler back and keep him from going after Henderson? Talk about senior leadership.
BISCUITS!!!
Posted by: NCProsecutor at March 8, 2007 10:31 AMPoor Gerald Henderson. NO ACC TOURNAMENT FOR YOU!
Posted by: apostropher at March 8, 2007 10:47 PMAlso, big congratulations to State for knocking off Duke. I thought running off Sendek was crazy, but maybe not. I can't help but like Sidney Lowe, especially having watched him guide the '83 team to the championship when I was a kid, which was far and away the most exciting run through a tournament ever. He's clearly gotten this team to perform waaaay above their talent level. If he's able to recruit as well as he coaches and motivates, he'll be there until he's old and gray.
Posted by: apostropher at March 9, 2007 09:42 AMI still think running off Sendek was crazy (which makes me the sole alumnus with that opinion), but State under Lowe has won a few games they weren't supposed to win. I'm not a big fan of hiring Alumni coaches (*cough cough* Amato *cough*), because it gets nasty if they suck; however, Sid seems to be able to get the kids up for big games. I'm anxious to see what happens when the honeymoon ends next year.

*cough cough* Doherty *cough*
Posted by: apostropher at March 9, 2007 10:05 AMAlso, I'm glad they've got former Clemson coach Cliff Ellis on the tournament broadcast team. An ACC tourney needs at least one broadcaster with a good, thick Southern accent.
Posted by: apostropher at March 9, 2007 01:16 PMIs it just me, or does Raycom/Jefferson Pilot update their onscreen score faster than any other broadcaster? It's uncanny!
