I read this earlier this week. I had the same "uh oh" reaction, as if it was really something new in the world. But: how long have the chimps really been doing this? I doubt that they learned it from violent video games or television shows (despite what the FCC might claim in congressional hearings related to their regulatory landgrabs), so maybe chimpanzes have been doing this since before humans existed, and we're just now finding out about it.

It sure wouldn't be the first time we were oblivious to the way nature worked for a few million years...

Apparently they've been using tools for at least 4000 years, but that's still a recent enough timeframe to have been a skill learned from humans. Even setting prejudices aside I don't know if I buy that but it would be an interesting investigative hypothesis for study. Link

I find this news even more alarming.

I wonder how long it will be before someone notices them stabbing each other instead of their food. Maybe we can name them "Cain-chimp" and "Abel-chimp" and invent a whole new monkey god... I'm liking this.

They'd get more people to pay attention to that article if the headline were something like "Spear-Wielding She-Chimps Hunt Babies".
