I saw that a week or three ago, can't remember who linked, but maybe it was in the comments to that ogged post about the old lady waving her cane at him because he didn't stop to let her cross? (too lazy to look it up)
Anyway, I love it.
Posted by: M/tch M/lls at December 20, 2006 12:30 AMIt appears the car drivers are beginning to firght back.
Also, while searching for other granny videos, I found this and thought of your nuts (I'd link to the appropriate unfogged comment and pic, but I can't find it).
Oh and I finally looked for it, and yep, you were pwnd by winna.
Posted by: M/tch M/lls at December 20, 2006 09:42 AMI think the whole thing was staged:
(1) Does anyone, even an old person, really fall asleep while crossing a street?
(2) Airbags don't pop out from a light tap like that.
(3) The guy in the car looks like an actor playing a yuppie, not a real yuppie. (It's just my Malcolm Gladwell "blink" reaction.)
(4) Anyone short-fused enough to rev his engine at a granny crossing the street would have started yelling and cursing at her if she hit his precious car and/or caused the airbag to deploy in his face.
Posted by: Gaijin Biker at December 20, 2006 10:06 PMAHA! It appears to be part of an Ikea ad campaign.
Observe:
(1) The version of the video you linked to is only 33 seconds long.
(2) At 0:37 of this version of the video, the words "What if..." are superimposed on the screen in bold white sans-serif italics. The video then ends with a black screen displaying the URL http://www.ikea.com/ps/ in the same font.
(3) Following that URL takes you to an Ikea website where you can "Select your country". I clicked on "United States", just for investigative purposes. (Japan isn't listed, anyway.)
(4) Clicking on "United States" opens up a Javascript window with a Myst-like point-and-click game you are meant to explore, in the process learning more about the quirky wonderfulness that is Ikea.
(5) Once in the point-and-click game, click on the neon blue arrow pointing left. You slide left to a different screen with an old movie projector.
(6) Click on the projector. A movie screen rolls down from a stand, and a hand pops up holding four cards with the names of different movies you can watch.
(7) Click on the leftmost card, named "Road Rage". Then click on "High" or "Low" on the same card, depending on your bandwidth.
(8) Voila! The granny-hitting-the-car movie plays.
Now, it's possible that Ikea is using someone else's genuine video. But I think they created the video intentionally for use on this website. This article about the "What if" website says that "Other features of the Web site include discussions with the product designers and even a blooper reel of video-taped events submitted by IKEA employees." Make of that what you will.
Posted by: Gaijin Biker at December 20, 2006 10:33 PMYou know, when I first saw it I really wondered if it was staged, mainly because the guy doesn't jump out of his car yelling etc., and it's weird that the film ends where it does. You'd think they'd keep filming the guy to see his reaction if it were real. Also the airbag deploying so easily.
But anyway, I still love it.
