I think it's part of the trend toward even greater infantilization. First they came with the Muppet Babies, Scrappy Doo, Elmo, etc. Pretty soon we're going to see Dora exploring in utero, Fetal Einstein, and Barney the Purple Blastocyst.

Speaking of Elmo, in case anyone here hasn't seen it, the last picture here is awesome.
