Tarheels in the news.

Posted by apostropher

On the one hand, quite tragic. On the other hand, quintessentially North Carolinian.

A legally blind man fatally shot his wife while trying to balance a plate of fried chicken and a pistol, authorities said. Kelly Honeycutt of Morganton was holding a .38-caliber pistol he found in a box while he and his wife were moving into a new home Monday night, said Burke County Sheriff's Sgt. Robert Beall said. He accidentally shot his wife Norita in the head after she handed her wheelchair-bound husband a plate of chicken [...] Beall said the husband was more than 50 percent blind, had limited movement and was in advanced stages of multiple sclerosis.

There's a lesson in all of this that really shouldn't ever have to be taught in the first place.

Who says blind people can't shoot straight?

Also, just in case any kin or friends show up here, it really is a tragic story, and my condolences to everyone involved.

Do they have the internet in Morganton?

Do you suppose it's possible that the fella may just have had about all of his wife's fried chicken that he cared to take, and is about to get away with the perfect murder?

And don't keep us in suspense about the lesson - is it to never hand chicken to a blind man when he's holding a gun? Don't shoot the hand that feeds you? Or that we need the government to do SOMETHING about hand guns to protect us from ourselves?

I would settle for a better job of revoking drivers' licenses. Whatta you want to bet this guy still has his?

Actually, the whole sad thing sounds like it could be the ending to some Flannery O'Connor story. On the bright side, this just might be what Kelly needs to redeem his soul ...

Blind people with parasthesias/paralysis should not eat while holding a gun? People with MS need to eat something less fatty than fried chicken? Guns make bad napkins?

It is a tragic, pointless death, and I am sorry the guy has poorly treated M.S. If you are going to handle a gun you have to have the instinct to put it down before you pick up anything else.

I recall a big news flap a few years back here in Virginny, where there was a big to-do about whether the legally blind should be permitted to participate in musket-loading (is that the right terminology?) hunting.

No google skills to turn it up though. Alas. Alack.

Dear hsw:

If Kelly and Norita Honeycutt are your parents, then please allow me to express my deepest sympathies at your loss of your mother through this tragic accident.

If not, then perhaps you might share a laugh with us at how cruel and senseless much of the world is. You may not have noticed, but the chief purpose of humor is to allow individuals and groups to find strength by laughing off their own or others' woes - it is a way to laugh in the face of the Fates and the Grim Reaper, even though we know we might be next.

So what jokes (lessons or analogies) can you draw from the situation?

How about the legally blind man is US foreign policy, his wife is Bush's former paleocon supporters and the found gun is our lack of serious attention to the Izzy-Pali conflict? Come on, help us find some senseless tragedies to laugh at.

norita was my mother i find no humor in the stupid mistakes of ignorant people disabled or not. bottom line blind guys should not own guns. also norita was killed 9 days before her first and only grandchild was borne. love ya mom tvm
