This cocaine is making me blow bubbles.

Just down the road in Cary:

Cary police are looking for a man who they said tried to pass off Ivory soap as cocaine during a drug operation. According to investigators, Stephen Curtis Hoyle, 18, of Castalia Drive in Cary sold 2.3 ounces of Ivory soap to police officers for $1,500 during a drug operation.

Sounds to me like he successfully passed off Ivory soap as cocaine, not just "tried to," seeing as he's got your money, you've got his soap, and you don't know where he is. Oops.

Apparently so.

"Although the suspect used a counterfeit substance as part of the operation, it is a crime to market a substance as cocaine in North Carolina," said Capt. Dave Wulff. Hoyle is wanted for one count of sale and delivery of a counterfeit controlled substance and one count of possession with intent to sale and delivery of a counterfeit controlled substance.

I feel sooooo much better knowing the cops in my area can't tell the difference between soap & cocaine. On the plus side, it's nice to see a teenager using his brain...

That made me laugh out loud. Reminds me of people in college looking for "weed" and ending up with little bags of dry leaves and broken up twigs. Sales of fake drugs apparantly runs rampant in NC.

I still don't understand why it should be illegal to sell overpriced Ivory soap under any name.

You know, the cops really should have figured something was up when the guy kept saying, "Hey, man, this shit is 99 and 44/100% pure."

I like that NC has combined its controlled substance laws with a consumer protection aspect.

So... this kid is actually my friend. He is a good kid too. Cary cops thing is to set people up with there young dectives. Im sure they were very excited about the deal and how it would be big news in cary, and how it would help them with their careers. However, now they are being laughed at because as it says, he sold them FAKE stuff and got away.

He did however turn himself into a friend of ours that is a US Marshall so the cary dectives, that are all very young and green to the scene, couldnt mess with him. The cary cops have a habit of thinking they are watching over a city like LA, and the majority, esp. in this situation, aren't very nice or fair people. Everytime the cops would goto places they thought he maybe, they told everyone how they had is car, and all his stuff, and bragging about it, tring to provoke something and how once they found him, that they would beat the crap out of him first. One of them even said he wanted to shoot him. I understand that they were mad about the situation and it didnt work out how they wanted, but that is uncalled for and extremely immature. That was the whole reason he went to the US Marshall, because he atleast was a good person and fair. All in all he just saw a way to get some fast money. He knows it was wrong, and he needs to face the charges. However, no one should ever fear the cops, esp. if you want to turn yourself in, but are scared of what they might do to you for making them look bad and incapible. What good are these people on this drug task force if they dont even know the difference between soap and cocaine.

Yeah, I saw just this morning that he'd been arrested. As funny as the original story was (and it certainly was), it totally sucks that he's in a world of trouble at just 18 years old.

On the other hand, less trouble than he'd be in if he had sold the cops real cocaine, and less trouble than if he'd sold real cokeheads soap.

So, I'm scratching my head: How did they know it was Ivory soap? I mean, if it still had the label on it, they weren't very smart cops. . .

They knew it was ivory because durning the bust they also took his car. When they went through he car they found the reciept for the soap and 2 unopened soap bars from a pack of three, plus the opened, empty box from the bar they bought.

Wait, isn't Ivory soap the one with the absolutely distinctive smell?

Also: "one count of possession with intent to sale and delivery of a counterfeit controlled substance" is the most bullshit charge I can imagine. I'm going to have to reconsider my possession of all that oregano in my spice rack.

And finally: e, I'm sorry for this kid, and I hope the judge shows leniency. Or that he gets a jury that believes in nullification.

Ivory does have a distinctive smell and is also one of the few products that is actually soap, not detergent. Simple PH tests tell the difference.
