If what Colin Powell's former chief of staff says is true, then it's time to impeach Cheney. Now. No ridiculous bitching about the "criminalization of politics." When the Vice President's office is spying on the National Security Council in order to prevent their analyses from reaching the President, he should be considered an enemy of the state. Even if you are pro-Bush, this should be an easy call. No defense exists for this.
I swear, every time you think these guys couldn't get any worse, they go and prove you dead wrong.
TrackBackHonest question: When the NSC was sending emails to Bush, is it at least possible that Cheney was reading those emails with Bush's permission? We all know Dubya likes to delegate. How unlikely is it that he said at some point, "Dick, you sort through all my emails and tell me what you think I need to know."
I'm not saying that's the best way to run things, but it would mean that Cheney wasn't some sort of rogue VP.
Posted by: GaijinBiker at November 5, 2005 04:25 AMExcept his staff wasn't sorting through Bush's emails (and somehow I suspect he'd be delegating that task to someone lower down the totem pole than Cheney in any event), they were reading internal NSC emails without authorization. The NSC folks stopped using the email system when they found out it was happening, according to Wilkerson. That isn't really congruent with a "filtering" task, but with being spied upon.
No, this smells.
Posted by: apostropher at November 5, 2005 10:24 AMShit, apo, where's the whimsy? Has it gone the way of the mullet? With ogged off on sabbatical (which, no doubt, involves copious amounts of lube) and you getting all political, I suppose I have only Harry Hutton and his demented gang of commenters left to turn to when I'm in need of sweet, sweet whimsy.
Come to think of it, not a bad idea. Never seen a pedantic Wolfson comment over on chasemeladies.
