Robust McManlyPants travels to Clarksville, Virginia and discovers where taste goes to die.
Gavin M. notes the aural horror that is Freedom Folks.
And then there's this.
TrackBackAlso, the comments thread on that Freedom Folks post at Sadly No! is hilarious. That is why the gods gave us the interwebs.
Posted by: Robust McManlyPants at August 19, 2005 01:13 PMSee, the thing is that amateur stuff should stay amateur.
If you put it on the web and try to make money off it you open yourself up to criticism - you open yourself wide open.
The songs really are nice enough- they aren't slamming anybody, and the singing is nice, too, but . . .
Ahhh, I wish MJ, Brian and Don the best. Maybe it is because I am sticking my own neck out a little right now but I don't want to trash someone else's art.
Their music is not my thing but it is not hateful and it is original and pretty good. I'd sit and listen to a concert for an hour or so.
Posted by: Tripp at August 19, 2005 01:37 PMDid Repent America never hear of the Civil Rights Act? Separate doors, in this day and age??
Posted by: Lex at August 19, 2005 02:00 PMThe Repent America website is good and all but I miss the guy on the corner with the sandwich board that says: "Repent" on one side and "The end is near" on the other.
Posted by: Tripp at August 19, 2005 03:04 PMMy favourite RA photo caption is: "Homosexual women wear snakes around their necks." You would think, nah! what weirdness! - but indeed, some women at Philly Pride were wearing snakes around their necks. Score one to RA for stating the obvious.
Posted by: KJ at August 19, 2005 07:16 PMIf you want I good look at the mindset of those that subscribe to the "Repent America" way, read some of the narratives on the site.
If a police officer gives you an order to stop doing something, or don't "go over there," my advice is to listen to the police officer, whether you agree or not. And don't act suprised when you get arrested. And don't piss of an officer, 'cause they'll find a reason to take you to the pokey! IDIOTS!
Repent America would respond to our Civil Rights Act with the claim that it supports Civil WRONG Acts (or something like that).
I thought the Atheist's letter on "Repent America " was right on! It is so fun to watch an atheist engage an evangelical in a debate.
apostropher, here's a great idea for one of those late nights of 'net surfing. How 'bout an American evangelical safari!
Posted by: Joel at August 19, 2005 08:04 PMThanks McPants!
I'll just go ahead and mark Clarksville, Virginia off my list of places to see : )
I liked the Christians Parking Only Sign. But the sign above it - "all other will be gassed" - Who's gettin' gassed?
Posted by: Joel at August 19, 2005 08:07 PMYou know, that's a good question. The Boyf asked me the same question when he saw that picture. I can't at all remember what the sign above it said, which leads me to believe it can't be that horrific (there are plenty of horrific things I can remember from that store that I didn't photograph but remember all too well).
Clarksville is actually a very nice little town, with friendly people and, of course, a gorgeous lake. Mariposa Cafe and Clarksville Antiques were well worth the visit, and this place, in its own special way, added to the magic of it all.
Posted by: Robust McManlyPants at August 19, 2005 09:18 PMJust getting around to this one now. I am seriously amused that Repent America says:
"In the same way, the reason you should 'put on the Lord Jesus Christ' shouldn't be to find peace, joy, true happiness, to have your marriage healed or your problems fixed, etc. (to have your flight improved), but it should be to escape the jump to come -- because of the fact that you have to pass through the door of death."
In my "Jerry Falwell is a godly man" upbringing we were always told that if you repented for above-mentioned reason, you were in it for the "fire insurance policy" and guess what? It didn't count.
That and where they state their beliefs it basically says "God is love!" immediately followed by "God will kick your ass! Now build me an altar."
