Anybody else find it odd to see a Confederate flag in this milieu? I realize that Hawaii is well south of the Mason-Dixon line, but still. Most self-identified "Rebs" I've known weren't exactly Thoreau-style spiritual retreaters.

Not remotely. Nixon took the state in 1968 and Reagan took it in 1984, but otherwise Dems have ruled the roost in presidential contests and both Senators and their single Representative are all Democrats. The current governor is the first Republican in four decades to hold the office and has no legislative base at all (State House 41D-10R; State Senate 20D-5R).
