Now I must visit Decatur.

Behold: the Hamdog.

Mulligan's, a suburban bar in Decatur, Georgia, serves a dish they call the "Hamdog": a hot dog wrapped in a beef patty that's deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions, and served on a hoagie bun topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. [...] It's one of Mulligan's other repasts, however, that may represent the ultimate in nutritive decadence through its combining greasy, cholesterol-stuffed meats with a sweet, fatty, deep-fried treat: the "Luther Burger," a bacon cheeseburger served on a Krispy Kreme doughnut bun.

You know, it's the little touches like deep-frying the hamburger patty that will ensure the Hamdog's immortality. A bacon cheeseburger on Krispy Kremes, though? That's inspired. I stand in awe. The link has a picture of a Hamdog, by the way.

I truly believe that Americans are trying to obese themselves to death. I am pretty sure my Norwegian wife would gag at seeing that picture.

Too bad you'd have to go all the way to Scotland to get just the right dessert: a deep-fried Mars bar. Nothing else would really do.

I can't wait till the health food craze sweeps Scotland and they start deepfrying cantaloupes and brussels sprouts.

Heaven knows I like fat - that is where the flavor is. I won't leave many fat scraps from my roast beef. But sweet and meat just don't go together for me.

Wait, wait a minute, I do like a sweet barbecue sauce, and I've been having the teriyaki beef jerky lately to cut down on salt.

Doggone it, order me up one of them Luther burgers. Even Martin would admit this is no diet of worms!

"Much of the South's traditional foods date back to the days of slavery. Frying was preferable in the region's hot climate, since it didn't take as long as baking and didn't heat up a house as much. Plus, workers didn't have all day to prepare meals; they had to get back into the fields to work. Lard was also plentiful. Today, frying still is popular, especially in poor areas of the South, because it is also inexpensive." (from linked article)

I have a Yankee friend who is fond of recalling the time his belle of a wife informed him (after he asked her if she could fry some 'ersters he had procured) "Honey, Ime frum Jaw-juh, I kin fry ehny-thang!"

Hamdog hamdog hamdog! That's really fun to say...although it does sound like a bad Nickelodeon cartoon...

Let me know when you head out to Decatur--I want one of those myself. Carnivore Caravan!

Hamdog..... MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

I would make 2 suggestions to the Fry Daddy Captain of Hamdogs. 1) Get rid of the egg. 2) Big slabs of bacon would enhance the taste (and ham factor), and will keep the hamburger in place - sort of like a twisty tie.
I'm gonna try this one @ home. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.
