If you actually "studied" the "history" of the "region", you'd realize the obvious truth that Syria - in the strategically untenable position of being a) almost completely surrounded by either hostile governments or their occupying troops, 2) a major focus of building global momentum in favor of proactive anti-terrorist regime change strategy, and d) faced with a military power imbalance that makes France's position in 1939 seem enviably secure by comparison - would be eager to take any and all steps necessary to provoke the ire of its bitterest enemy and that nation's guardian state, chief beater of the aforementioned drums.
