Conspiracy!

Posted by apostropher

NASA's press conference announcing conclusive evidence that water once existed plentifully on Mars took place this afternoon, despite the fact that the implications of said evidence were apparent at least as early as last week. Obviously everybody wants to make sure they have all their ducks in a row before making a big announcement, but almost every researcher in the field was already well-convinced that water played a major role in Martian development at some point. So why the delay? Why today? I think I may know.

Consumers can buy the new Giant Shrimp at the chain's more than 1,250 restaurants beginning February 16, 2004. If NASA announces the discovery of conclusive evidence of an ocean on Mars prior to February 29, 2004, America gets free Giant Shrimp at participating Long John Silver's restaurants on Monday, March 15, 2004, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Two days past the deadline. It is now abundantly clear who really trawls the corridors of power in Washington, DC. And I, for one, welcome our new deep-fried crustacean overlords.

Can I just say I hate the "if thus-and-so happens, then we'll give you this great deal!" type of promotion?

This year a local jeweler ran an "everything you buy between now and Christmas is free if it snows on Christmas eve" offer, which sounded jaw-droppingly dangerous. And then the snow started. I haven't checked to see if they're still in business.

Can I also just say that this needs repeating?

Long John Silver exec: "If there's ocean water on Mars, that would be giant news. And giant news calls for Giant Shrimp!"

I knew Nike was just one big corporate cult, but I never thought that mediocre seafood chains could inspire the same kind of intense, shame-defying devotion.

How big is "giant?" Are these just-slightly-bigger-than-jumbo, or is this more of a novelty size? Like, are we talking bigger than a breadbox? Smaller? The size of my Jeep? Deep-fried minds want to know.

How big is "giant?"

From the press release:
Long John Silver's new Giant Shrimp are huge, measuring nearly a half-foot long. "Our new Giant Shrimp are so big, they're really 'out of this world,'" said Baker.

Is that six inches with or without the tail?
Are they stretched out flat unnaturally (like tempura shrimp)? Is the breading thicker than standard seafood coating? Hmmm... all these questions...

There might have to be a reconnaisance mission to examine these giant Martian shrimp. But, come to think of it, I don't even know where a LJS's is now that South Square is gone... hmmm....
