A slow-moving snowstorm is setling in over North Carolina, and the snow that just began falling here in Durham an hour or two ago is expected to continue until sunrise tomorrow. Wintry weather this far south usually brings traffic accidents and power outages, but for once it's keeping something unpleasant away instead.

Classes were canceled or called off early Thursday as a winter storm bore down from the south, dumping up to 6 inches in the sandhills and promising more precipitation during the day. A scheduled visit to Charlotte by President George W. Bush has been canceled, according to the White House.
