The Biggest Volcano in the Solar System

This is Olympus Mons. At 22 kilometers (14 miles) tall, it's three times the height of Mt. Everest. It measures 550 km (342 miles) across, covering an area about half the size of Spain. The color pictures are looking down into the caldera, which is three km deep itself.

Can you imagine the force of the explosion that created this?

Kaboom.

Kaboom is right, could you imagine trying to stand up straight when it blew? The ground would most likely make you fall on your ass...LoL

By the look of the slope and the shape of the caldera, I would say that there was not much "kaboom" involved. If so, it would have a shape more like Mt. St. Helens. But the shape is more like the Mauna Loa volcano, which "fountains and flows" more than it "kabooms".

Olympus Mons is a shield volcano that extrudes Basalt, this means it dosnt explode at all, lava runs down the sides which makes it the gradual sloping shape. If it had steep sides, or was just a caldera by itself (like lake taupo in New Zealand) then it would be the explosive sort of volcano. (needs a complete differnt sort of lava too by the way..)
And Mt St Hellens is not as silicic as Chaiten volcano in Chile, which just erupted in may. This could be the most explosive volcano weve ever seen, possibly as big as Krakatoa or Taupo even, if it continues to erupt and then forms a caldera.
That would be 'boom', and cause major global cooling probably.
