I think I have something in my eye...

...and it's coming out the back of my head.

Then, he fell off the ladder face-first and onto the drill, which went through his right eye and out his skull, just above his right ear. According to Ben, doctors told him the drill pushed his brain aside, rather than impaling it, which could have caused further - and most likely vastly more extensive - damage.

Corrin Keck, a friend of Ron's, said other than loss of sight in his right eye, she has not seen any major effects. "At this point, we haven't noticed any problems with his motor skills and speech."

Holy crap.

In my day, we woulda put a band-aid on it, maybe some iodine if it was dirty, walked it off, and finished the job.

"The hardest part, she said, is he was not insured for the job he was performing. According to Ben, he did have insurance, but for this particular job he was listed as a sub-contractor, and was not covered under his insurance.

Keck has begun to organize fund-raisers for his hospital bills, which are already starting to accumulate...

In addition to fund-raisers, Keck set up the "Ron Hunt Medical Fund" at Bank of the West. Donations to the Ron Hunt Medical Fund may be made at any Bank of the West."

Unfortunately this is WAY TOO common among folks that do some of the most dangerous work. And what kills me is that the argument against single-payer is that it's too inefficient. People, "We" are going to pay for these medical bills one way or another; how is single payer any more inefficient than the mess we have now? And most importantly, why add all the stress to this family? Regardless of how lucky he was, rehabilitation will be difficult and they shouldn't have to be running telethons to pay for it.

"Ben did say, however, that Ron is using this as a positive experience. "It's just going to be one of those stories," Ben said. "He'll joke around with his glass eye and pop it out..."

But don't lose it; we're not buying you another one.

Ron's a real good guy. I knew him in High school 25 years ago. What a tragedy. He's got kids, too. Well, let's hope he can go back to work and that a lot of people are exposed to his story and will help him out. I hear he's 41 days free of Alcohol. Still going strong. WIsh you luck buddy!
Until I see you again!
