Doggedly searching for the crux of the biscuit.
A word of thanks goes out to The Talking Dog, who added apostropher to his Dog Run, labelling this site a German shepherd/lab mix. The link is more oddly appropriate than may at first be apparent given that the tagline "Doggedly searching for the crux of the biscuit" is a reference to a Frank Zappa song that ends:
Well then Fido got up off the floor, and he rolled over
and he looked me straight in the eye
And you know what he said?
"Once upon a time, somebody say to me"
This is the dog talkin' now
"What is your conceptual continuity?"
"Well I told 'em right then," Fido said,
"It should be easy to see:
The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe."
Well you know, the man that was talking to the dog
looked at the dog and he said,
Sort of staring in disbelief,
"You can't say that."
And the dog said
"It doesn't, and you can't, I won't, and it don't
it hasn't, it isn't, it even ain't, it shouldn't, and
it couldn't."
I told him, "No, no, no."
He told me, "Yes, yes, yes."
I said, "I do it all the time.
Ain't this boogie a mess?"
So, The Talking Dog linking to apostropher (and vice versa) is a case of conceptual continuity writ large. And if this gets any more meta, the clouds will part and I will be taken up into self-referential heaven, where the prophet has promised me 72 doe-eyed sturgeons. From a 1988 McLuhan Institute interview:
Zappa: Conceptual continuity has got nothing to do with me analysing the news. Conceptual continuity has got to do with me living my life and turning my life into things that entertain other people. The things that I release in the video and the records and the rest of that stuff, it's part of my life. For whatever it's worth at that time that it comes out. That's a byproduct of my life. That's the conceptual continuity. Analysing the news is not me imposing a pattern on the news. I try and get as much data as I can and then, based on what I'm able to gather together, I draw a conclusion. And those conclusions could change if I get more data.
Marshall: Conceptual continuity implies an idea. The way you've just said it, it is a biographical continuity or mental....
Zappa: No, no, there is a concept to what I'm doing and there is a continuity to the concept, and I happen to be living inside of the concept. I'm a participant in it.
Marshall: And the concept is common sense and taking in data and learning.
Zappa: That's not the conceptual continuity.
Marshall: Could you correct me then? State...
Zappa: Well, the conceptual continuity is this: everything, even this interview, is part of what I do for, let's call it, my entertainment work. And there's a big difference between sitting here and talking about this kind of stuff, and writing a song like "Titties and Beer." But as far as I'm concerned, it's all part of the same continuity. It's all one piece. It all relates in some weird way back to the focal point of what's going on.

a friend of mine used "Crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe" in conversation, attributed it to Zappa, which got me to wonder, "is that how the album Apostrophe got its name?"

only book in his room at the olympic hotel in seattle that nite after the concert, was "Dimensional Analysis". i only had a few minutes to scan it before he removed the towel from under the door to the hall(frank wanted no pot smokin on tour) and we went downstairs to the lounge. or as firesign theater might say "HOW CAN YOU BE AT TWO PLACES AT ONCE,WHEN YOU ' RE NOT ANY WHERE AT ALL " STEPHEN WOLINSKY,KORZYBSKY,and KEN WILBUR all agree

Doggedely searching for the crux of the biscuit ehh??? i bet the dog never does get to the crux of the biscuit. Perhaps it is the amusement which he derives from that dogged search...eh??? perhaps the excitement-the process-is all that he needs, eh??? lost in that search he stays occupied for a while but never really finds the truth...and perhaps that state of excitement- of unknowing is what sets him free-gives him a sense of "i think I am getting to it'," and perhaps that sense-however deleusive- is all he needs...cuz I don't thinkwe will EVER get it..Amen..hehehee
